Open Doors Report 2023-24: In the academic year 2023-2024, a remarkable 3,31,602 Indian students pursued higher education across American campuses, a 23% surge from the previous year.

According to the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange, the total number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities reached an all-time high of more than 1.1 million (1,126,690) international students in 2023/2024, a 7% increase from the previous year.

“The Open Doors Report shares great news that builds on last year’s great news when it comes to India & US and our education partnership. It shows that there has been an increase of more than 20%, building on an increase of 30% and more. More than a 50% increase in the number of students coming to the US just over the last two years,” US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti told ANI.

What is Open Doors?

According to educationusa.state.gov, the U.S. Department of State funds the Open Doors report – the definitive annual survey produced by the Institute of International Education (IIE) of foreign students and scholars in the United States and of U.S. students studying abroad in credit-bearing courses.

Open Doors data is used by U.S. embassies, the Departments of State, Commerce, and Education, and other federal, state, and local organizations to inform policy decisions about educational exchanges, trade in educational services, and study abroad activity. U.S. colleges and universities, foreign governments, and the media rely on these comparative statistics to analyze trends in student mobility.

The report also provides data on places of origin, sources of financial support, fields of study, host institutions, academic level, and rates of growth of the international student population in the United States, as well as on the economic impact of international students to the state where they study and the nation as a whole.
